Children of Time reviews: New Who

Title: Always With Me
Author: Onthetardis
Categories: New Who - Doctor/Donna, Genfic
Review: The author has dedicated this story to her late sister, so criticising it would make this reviewer rather feel like she had kicked a puppy. Suffice it to say that the dedication was a sweet idea.

Thus, turning the discussion to another topic that readers may or may not care to debate, there is the issue of story categorisation. I checked the CoT rules, and for the pairings categories (including Doctor/Donna, where this fic is in the running) it's stated that "This category is for stories that focus on the romantic or sexual relationship between the listed characters." Yet Always With Me is also nominated as Genfic, where the rules state that "Fiction can not be about the relationship. The characters can have a relationship-in the background- but it must not be a main part or point in the story." Always With Me is all about the Doctor's feelings for Donna; their relationship is definitely not background material. So, how can this specific story simultaneously qualify in a pairing category and as genfic?

As I see it, it doesn't. Admittedly, I've never been a big fan of allowing a single story to compete in as many as three categories in these awards. But since multiple categories are permitted, shouldn't a story at least properly qualify for each of them?

Readers, any thoughts?

Title: Led Into Temptation
Author: K_haldane
Categories: New Who - Classic Fic
Review: The fic posting does not have proper headers, which may turn off some readers. Perhaps the author's intent was to not give away the pairing, but including the title and rating (though it's probably only just a PG) would have been nice. At any rate, the CoT nominations page does list the pairing, which is Jack's coat/Doctor's coat.

Yes, Led Into Temptation is glorious crackfic. While occasionally the phrasing is a little awkward (a lot of "Jack's coat" and "the Doctor's coat" floating around here), the idea is fun and the coats have their own personalities. Yes, personalities. The author also posted a commentary version that's worth a look.

I sat down and drew out a chart, trying to figure out how all the categories in CoT fit together - and I still saw stories bumped from one section to another based on topic, length, age, etc. So someone is looking at the stories and deciding what goes where.
It was a frustrating enough experience that I doubt I will nominate in the future.

I'm really not sure why they think they need so many categories, either, unless it's so they can hand out awards to as many authors as possible.

I personally think a story shouldn't be able to be nominated in more than one category. And I get really annoyed when gen fic gets nominated in ship categories and vice versa. Last time, one of my favourite gen stories was nominated in the Doctor/Donna category, and it doesn't matter how wonderful it is, it doesn't belong there if there's no romance.

At the same time, it's not really CoT's fault that people don't know how to nominate properly - checking through that every story is in the category it belongs would be useful and definitely on my wishlist, but that's a huge undertaking.

I think, though, that partly the problem is that there are a gazillion different categories in CoT and it gets confusing what should go where. I nominated a bunch of different stories this year and quite honestly it took some effort to figure it out.

If they limited each story to one category, I think it would streamline the process and noticeably improve matters.

I think CoT asked authors to confirm category as part of accepting a nomination (though I could be misremembering things), so this could be the author's mistake as well as the nominator's, on top of CoT's for not double-checking things. It does seem like by default, anything nominated in a gen category should be ineligible for a pairing category and vice-versa.

True. I have to say, though, that CoT has done a much better job this round than last of not letting mistakes get by.
